We love projects that are driven by a combination of architecture and setting. The house is a Mid-Century modern classic, one of the first houses built in the area, perched on one of the highest points in Dakota County. We were inspired to redesign the landscape to emphasize the architecture of the house while also blending into the surrounding wooded hillside. In addition to designing the transition of the structured beds into a woodland canopy layer, we had to address deer pressure and water flow on a steep slope.
The existing lawn featured a statue of Harmon Killebrew–we created planted ‘bleachers’ to highlight the sculpture and transitioned the traditional turf into lush no-mow fescue which reduces their need to mow.
One of our favorite parts about this project are the lovely clients who have lived in the house for 50+ years and are wonderful stewards of their unique property and house. We continue to work on their landscape, making sure the existing plantings get established under the heavy deer presence as well as transforming new spaces each season.
