Apothecary Farmhouse Rehab

Perched upon a limestone bluff and nestled into a riparian woodland, our primary goal for this picturesque property was to design a whimsical and welcoming garden well suited to the spectacular river-bluff setting. Inspired by the historic charm of the old farmhouse as well as the client’s desire for a herbal apothecary garden and labyrinth, we borrowed from “old world” garden design traditions such as an entrance allée, cloister/courtyard garden and medicinal herb garden to create a feeling of soft formality set against the wilderness edge. At the same time, we embraced the rugged features of the property (dry stacked wall, boulder deposits, and native ecologies) and enhanced the natural woodland setting through the use of ecologically beneficial plant species, rustic hardscape materials and nature play elements. The result is a collection of enticing nooks and outdoor rooms effortlessly connected on a journey through a hidden garden both playful and serene.
