Located in the heart of downtown St. Paul, this 37 unit townhouse complex presented some design challenges: large amounts of pavement and hardscape resulting in lack of habitat and food for beneficial creatures as well as creating heat islands, lack of predators allowing rabbits proliferate and browse the plantings, planting in shallow soil on top of a parking garage, and use of green spaces by many dogs.  Working with a homeowner’s association and the many stakeholders involved presented it’s own challenges. The final design resulted in a highly organized, yet native courtyard garden, using “wild” native species that are drought tolerant and will introduce wildlife back into the urban fabric.
